Ogallala 03:10
Was afraid, went off course Ran aground on my horse My canteen, is bone dry, teeth they clatter Could wring out my heavy cloak, use it just like liquid smoke But i wish i had a fresh drink of water I feel silly roaming out here on the plains I can barely tell the saddle from the reigns But i'd better buck up, tell my mare to giddy up Singing tunes of Smith Ballew to my heart's patter Ogallala la la la.... Ogallala i like you best from afar Thought i liked the simple life, got my compass got my knife Got enough flints to light up the whole hereafter But my stomach rumbles on, can't bring myself to set upon A buffalo, let alone a fuzzy rabbit I spy a chuck wagon approaching in the mist They've got peach cobbler and buttermillk biscuits But i'm stuck here on this log, guess i'm finished with this slog I'm not cutout for the wilds of Nebraska Ogallala la la la Ogallala i will love you from afar Ogallala la la la Ogallala i like you just the way you are

Is it a crayfish or is it a crawfish? Do you call it sushi, or is it just a raw fish? When you eat corn on the cob, do you nibble just a little Or hold it like a log and bite a stripe down the middle? There's so many ways to do these things No wrongs a lotta rights, makes me feel outta sight Is it a dollop or is it a drizzle? Do you call em jimmies, or rainbow sprinkles When you make SOS what do you use for the shingle, A burned piece of toast, mashed potatoes, or a pringle? There's so many ways to say what you want What's soda in Dakota might be pop in Vermont Why do they call it funnel cake? It doesn't look like a funnel and i wouldn't say That it resembles cake at all, But it's a better name than that ho-hum fried dough Is it a tad, or is it just a little? Do you call it toffee, or is it peanut brittle? When you're going down to the corner for some filling for some bread Is it a grinder or a hoagie or a sub you're gonna get And after all that, second-guessing it again Are you visiting a bubblah or a water fountain? Is it a crayfish or is it a crawfish Do you call it sushi, or is it just a raw fish? When you eat corn on the cob do you nibble just a little Or spin it like a top with your head on a swivel? There's so many ways to do these things I'd rather wear dungarees than boring old jeans Tomatoes and tomahtos are the least of it it seems Different walks - i like it a lot

You can't get there from here, sorry to say you're out of luck No way you're going door-to-door, unless you've got a 4x4 Like Hansel and Gretel with their fists all full of crumbs You're gonna have to chart a path To get back to where you are from I'll show you my map Might do more harm than help These two roads here they don't connect, And the one in the middle hasn't been built yet So go 100 feet - you'll come upon a fork Take a left at that and keep an eye out for: A family of bears, carved from an old pine trunk They introduce old Wilson Road, cuz that sign fell down years ago So head on 'round that bunch, keep walking a straight line Squint your ears, and perk your eyes Cuz in the distance you will find A barn with a chimney in the middle that's painted With a Mural of the Ascension Across from that is a red schoolhouse With a mailbox painted like a fire engine Go past these, you'll know you're on the right track Disregard old Spicy Sage His default when you ask him that is (chorus) As the crow flies, that's a saying for the birds! Hike up those britches high, we've got a mudflat to traverse Follow this red line, you can barely make it out It curves around old bubbling brook And it lets you out by the old schoolhouse Well if we all had wings, this place is really close But you can't get there in your fancy car Cuz here in the sticks, there ain't no roads But you'll see that there's perks to living off the beaten path When Mabel comes and offers you A pint from her blackberry patch! As if that weren't enough we've got miles of corn in September After that we'll tap the trees You'll see that maple syrup gleam! You're gonna learn to love living Mother Nature's Way Don't let the locals scare you off When they look you right in the eye and scoff (chorus)

It's been a lonely Summer It's bound to be a lonelier Fall And the Winter months, don't even need a reason They're the desolatest ones of all I know - i've been feeling ill at ease and I know the reason - the reason is the season I think i'll have a better time just staying at home I'm not alone So i don't bother your cheery blue eyes What're you; exempt? For that i feel contempt Here i am balancing the weight of the world You're putting bids in on a fifth edition Starscream It's been a lonely Summer It's bound to be a lonelier Fall And the Winter months, don't even need a reason They're the desolatest ones of all It seems i cease to be merry Every year when we reach January I think i'll have a better time just staying at - It's times like these the social scene is not a place where i belong I think i'll have a better time staying at - Just point the Presto Heat Dish in my general direction and be gone I think i'll have a better time just staying at home.

I come stumbling in from a night of running 'round To find you staring glumly out at tinsel town I wanna tell you who i saw Who got kicked out, who played guitar But all i get is a cold shoulder as you icily regard me With your chilly bloodshot eyes - have you been up all night? You gravely say you were so tired but felt that it was only right To wait up til i got home, some kinda gentlemanly code Well i can see right through your phony rigmarole You blame it on a woman who harmed you But i won't pay for all those sins Cuz i'm not her, and it's not back then So redirect your words into your pillow on the floor Cuz honey, what you say can't hurt me anymore Think back to nights, with just the two of us You seemed to relish every chance to orate and interrupt "You know how women are" sez you While clearly having not a clue My plan is set, my foot is out the door So long, adieu! Well it was four nights ago that i took leave of you Through bramble bushes, nettle trees, i made it though My exit it was quick, i didn't look back, not a stitch Even when i had my thumb out on the shoulder of Route 6 And all those fickle friends you used to know Were all dropping hints that i should learn to let you go Well i've finally seen the light, and now i'm headed for the door Cuz honey what you say can't hurt me anymore You blame it on a slip of the tongue but Too many times you've said too much I'd be a fool to ignore such a weasely display I didn't notice it before But honey now your words can't reach me anymore Talk all you want, see i'm not listening anymore Your audience has dwindled to your desk and floor Even the cat has noticed your boorish rapport Cuz honey - what you say can't hurt me anymore

I see you lurking on a Saturday night I sidle over trying to will your eyes to look my way I got a lotta things to say Concentrate on the pint look easygoing... Time is your mate The band they kick into a foot-stomping song The guy behind me spills his drink on my arm When i back up - to grab a cloth to clean it off It's close quarters, I slip jostle your seat And our eyes meet Two hours later and my plan's taking shape Hope i don't blow it, trying to put on the brakes I talk too fast - but so do you; it's such a blast The band's long gone, and the barkeep's closing up But we're not done The sun is making it's appearance too soon Don't look over that way - over this way we're still backlit by the moon Don't wanna say goodnight But I've got all these little things To smile about until we meet again Let's keep this thing rolling Off to the race, we're gonna win Off to the race, we're gonna win!

about

Finally i finished the second EP! This one is a little more rootsy, a little more "Americana"-ish i guess, than the last one with the sad indie rock sorta songs. Four of these songs ended up on the new Jittery Jack record, but they're here in their original bare bones drum-less, bass-less form. The other two might have too many lyrics - a lesson learned for the next EP - and I attempted to add a bass line to "Off to the Race". Had limited success, but i figured it was worth a try!
